Center For Politics Studies (PUSKAPOL)

PUSKAPOL UI is a research institution engaged in research, advocacy, consultation, publications, and community service. Established since 1993, PUSKAPOL UI (formerly known as the Political Science Laboratory) was formed by the Department of Political Science FISIP UI as an effort to respond to socio-political developments in Indonesia and the need for alternative solutions based on serious studies and research. As a campus-based research institution, PUSKAPOL UI strives to produce knowledge based on scientific principles to be used for the public interest, where the results of PUSKAPOL UI's research are sought to find and develop various alternative solutions in solving existing social and political problems. Since its establishment until now, PUSKAPOL UI has undergone four phases of development.

At the beginning of its establishment (1993-2000), PUSKAPOL UI's activities focused on the introduction of institutions and internal consolidation in line with the growth of study centers within the University of Indonesia. The development of the second five years (2001-2005) was marked by the change of name from Labpol to PUSKAPOL UI which is the university's policy. During this period, PUSKAPOL UI's activities focused on organizational consolidation, personnel mapping, and designing strategic issues as a research agenda. The next period (2006-2016) was marked by the opportunity to strengthen institutional, personnel, and strategic research capacity. During this period, PUSKAPOL UI succeeded in designing two strategic study clusters which became one of the trademarks of PUSKAPOL UI studies to date, namely the Political Representation and Political Decentralization clusters.

In 2017, PUSKAPOL UI again underwent institutional changes in line with university policies. This change puts PUSKAPOL UI as a research institution that is directly under the coordination of the faculty. Institutionally, since 2018 PUSKAPOL UI is under the management of the Institute for Socio-Political Research and Development, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia (LPPSP FISIP UI) which oversees all study centers within the faculty and manages academic and non-academic activities autonomously with full flexibility. This period was also marked by the development of a focus of new studies in response to contemporary socio-political developments in Indonesia and at the global level.

Until now, PUSKAPOL UI continues to contribute to efforts to improve good political governance, especially on several issues, namely reform of the ownership and party system, political representation, human rights, and support for marginalized groups. PUSKAPOL UI is also known as one of the campus study institutions that has concern for issues and advocacy of marginalized groups such as women in the formal political arena, and actively conducts various forms of studies and advocacy related to efforts to encourage the realization of more democratic political governance. The approach taken by PUSKAPOL UI UI is to provide support in the form of the results of studies and knowledge production as well as alternative solutions to advocacy and empowerment work carried out by civil society groups to improve good and more democratic political governance.

In developing and producing research-based knowledge, PUSKAPOL UI prioritizes professionalism and research ethics in order to maintain integrity and reputation as a campus-based research institution. PUSKAPOL UI also dedicates all research and community service activities to encourage scientific debate and improve better and democratic political governance.

The vision of PUSKAPOL UI is to become a leading and trusted political research institution. There are two objectives to be achieved from the various activities that have been, are being and will be carried out by PUSKAPOL UI. First, these activities have an academic purpose, namely scientific development related to socio-social problems using scientific rules. Second, PUSKAPOL UI's research and community service activities are also aimed at finding alternative thoughts, solutions and praxis recommendations for social problems.

To realize its vision, PUSKAPOL UI carries out three main missions, namely:

  1. Produce reputable political studies products.
  2. Encourage active scientific debate, increase public awareness, and promote alternative policy solutions related to social and political issues.
  3. Develop partnerships with academic and non-academic communities, including practitioners, civil society, and policymakers in solving social and political problems.
